Store SEO: the checks that matter.

An online store is hundreds of product pages built from one template. A mistake in the template repeats on every page. That is where store SEO starts.

Start with the template

Most store problems repeat across pages. One theme setting can give every product page the same description, or turn the logo into a second H1 on every page. Check one product page, one collection page and the home page first. Whatever is wrong there is wrong everywhere. The free meta tag checker does this in seconds.

Product pages

  • Titles near 60 characters, starting with what the product is.
  • Descriptions long enough to answer a buyer: material, size, use, care. Under 50 words is thin.
  • Alt text on every product image, naming the product.
  • Product schema with price, currency, availability, brand and SKU. Check with the schema checker.

Collections and duplicates

Products that appear in several collections can be reachable at several addresses. A canonical tag tells search engines which one is the main page. Duplicate product titles across colors or seasons compete with each other; make each one distinct.

Indexing

  • A sitemap that lists your products, collections and pages. Shopify creates one at /sitemap.xml.
  • A robots.txt that does not block what you want found, AI crawlers included.
  • No important page set to noindex by accident.

Speed

Google’s mobile speed test shows how long your main content takes to appear (LCP). Large hero images and too many apps are the usual causes. See Core Web Vitals.

Out of stock

Listed products that cannot be bought send shoppers to a dead end. Hide them, or show when they return and suggest an alternative.

What to fix first

Fix what repeats across the most pages, on the pages that sell the most. A template fix beats a hundred page edits. Uruora’s scan ranks findings exactly this way and names the pages and products affected.

Questions

How long should a product description be?

Long enough to answer what a buyer asks before buying. Uruora flags descriptions under 50 words as thin, because they rarely do.

Does Shopify handle SEO for me?

Shopify creates the sitemap, canonical tags and basic schema through most themes. Titles, descriptions, alt text and content are yours to write.
