Shopify theme detector: what theme is this store using?
Enter a store address and see the Shopify theme behind it, its version, and the apps we can spot in its page code.
What it does
The detector loads the store's homepage, confirms it runs on Shopify, and reads the theme details Shopify writes into every storefront: the theme's name in the store, the original theme it is built on, its version, its Theme Store ID and its role.
When the store has renamed the theme, we show both names. When there is a Theme Store ID, you get a link to search for that theme in the Shopify Theme Store. With no ID, the theme is usually custom built, bought outside the Theme Store, or uploaded by hand.
We also list apps we can see in the page code, matched by the addresses their scripts load from: email and SMS tools, reviews, subscriptions, chat, analytics, ad pixels and buy now, pay later.
Why it matters
If you admire a competitor's store, the theme tells you how much of it you can get off the shelf and how much is custom work. The apps tell you how they collect emails, show reviews and track ads.
For your own store, it is a quick check of which theme version you run. Old versions miss fixes and newer features.
How to use the result
- Search the theme in the Theme Store and open its demo to see what comes standard.
- If the name and the original theme differ, expect custom code on top of the base theme.
- Treat the app list as a starting point. Apps that load only on product pages, after a click, or through Shopify's pixel system may not show on the homepage.
- Compare the version with the latest one in the Theme Store before you decide to update.
Questions
How can I tell what Shopify theme a store uses?
Shopify writes a Shopify.theme object into the page code with the theme name and version. This tool reads it for you. You can also view the page source and search for Shopify.theme.
Why does it say the theme is renamed?
Store owners often duplicate a theme and give the copy a new name. The original name, the schema name, shows which theme it was built on.
Why is there no Theme Store ID?
Themes bought outside the Shopify Theme Store, custom themes and some uploaded copies do not carry one.
Can it detect every app?
No. It sees apps that load scripts or links on the homepage from known addresses. Apps that work only in the admin or on other pages do not show.
Does it work on headless Shopify stores?
Often not. Headless stores use their own front end and may not include the Shopify.theme object.
